Search Engine OptimisationSearch Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the art of making sure that your business shows up at the top of the results for relevant searches on major search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. That’s the free placements, not the ads. 2 out of 3 New Zealanders research purchases online before making them. Every day, almost regardless of what you produce, sell or provide, there are a large number of searches on these search engines by people looking for exactly what you sell.

The major factors that influence good SEO rankings are:

  • Good and relevant content for your industry sector - Content is King.
  • Fresh quality content - regular website updates
  • A correctly configured and compliant website using best practices
  • Social Media Optimisation - this strongly influences incoming links to your site
  • Website traffic levels - also influenced by SEM and SMO

Note: There are many other factors that influence your website's rankings (e.g. the Google Search Engine Algorithm reportedly includes 200+ Parameters) but the above items are the most significant.

Social Media Optimisation

Social Media Optimisation (SMO) is now a major factor in Search Engine Optimisation, social sites include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, LinkedIn, etc. These social sites are typically linked back to your Blog - see Incoming links to your site.

Social media optimisation is now closely linked to search engine optimisation, as search engines are increasingly using the recommendations of users of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ to rank pages in the search engine result pages. The implication is that when a web page (blog page excerpt) is shared or "liked" by a user on a social network, it counts as a "vote" for that web page's quality. Search engines now use these votes to rank web sites in search engine results pages.

See chart below which shows a typical method of sharing news items via social media:
